First Birthing
Eastern Red Cedar with Walnut Base
25 x 7 x 5 in.
2006
$2,500.00

First Birthing is a sculpture that began as a celebration of fire or flame and evolved into a symbol of woman after giving birth to her first child. The stories of how a woman feels the first few days after giving birth to a child left an impression on me that is reflected in the piece. She feels like there is an empty space in her belly where the child used to be. She feels like she has lost her identity (has become faceless) as everyone admires the child, and the only identity she has now are two swollen breasts that the child depends upon for life. All of this imbedded in a figure that is rising up with the Flame of Life that the human race is dependant upon for survival.

Blue Cat Wave
Red Oak Root
21 x 9 x 7 in.
2006
$3,500.00

The top view of Blue Cat Wave and the two views immediately above on the left and middle are of Blue Cat Wave on one side. The right view is of Blue Cat Wave from the reverse side. There isn't really a top and bottom to this piece, although the name does reference the impression of a cat lying on it's back from the first three views. The piece was made from the root of a red oak tree that had blown over in a wind storm. Part of the process was to bring out the beauty of the wood grain that is characteristic of tree roots but this isn't used very often in fine art sculpture. As the piece went through the process of refinement the impression that the wood was the water of a wave washing up on shore. The cat lying on its back also evolved. A light wash of oil pigment was applied to the wood prior to finishing it with a specially formulated varnish.

Mountains And Rivers
Rock Maple
17 x 8 x 7 in.
2006
$3,000.00

Mountains And Rivers is titled after a Chinese painting, Mountains And Rivers Without End. The piece doesn't have a defined base but is intended to be positioned to the view the person is drawn to at the moment, then turned and enjoyed from other views over time. With the dynamic quality of Rock Maple grain and the beauty of the wood, it is a piece that can be explored and new insights found in the piece without end.
